About this deal

If you think of a good crypto pun, please insert it here as a good start to thinking the way this game requires you to think. Also if you look at that gamefound, it's easy to be deceived---the actual gameplay portions are not cheap but aren't over the top expensive. That said, it makes a great gift, and I think it’s a hoot to play, so if you’re looking for another team deduction game that’s a solid fit for a board game night, I’d highly recommend checking out Decrypto! That mindset got me through a lot of math classes, and I’m pretty sure it’s also applicable to games of Decrypto.

The clues given are pretty difficult, sure, but if you already know that the clues “PLANET” and “HOT” have been given for 1, it might be easier to assume that 1 is Mercury and act from there.Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games!

If your team can hop onto it, you can totally bamboozle your opponents if you can string together the right set of clues (or a seemingly random set). The objective of Decrypto is to relay a code to your team as the encrypter, using clues which associate to your team’s secret words without giving away what your words might be, as each round the team has the chance to intercept your message and guess the code. Personally, I see Codenames as more of a “game to play at a party” than “game to play at game night” (just, personally), so this game is right up my alley, and I appreciate that. Yeah, sounds like they prioritized actually finishing the licensed ones to me by giving up on the other ones (and asking for additional money).

If you get it right, you get the satisfaction of not receiving the Miscommunication token of utter failure and despair. That said, I think that comes with some complexity cost, and I think you’ll see more people with Codenames in their home than Decrypto for that exact reason; Codenames is kind of timelessly simple, whereas Decrypto is just complicated enough that I think it risks not penetrating the mass market veil fully. If there is a tie (whether one team has 2 of each type, or both teams have two of the same type), then each team calculates their score with each positive marker being worth +1 point and each penalty marker being worth -1 point.

Each team is given a code screen (pictured below) and 4 cards numbered 1 through 4 with a single word printed on their faces. His favorite games are The Gallerist, Lords of Waterdeep, and any heavy game he can get his hands on.Starting in the second round, a member of each team must again give a clue about their words to match a numbered code.

It creates some memorable moments as you try to outwit your opponents without confusing your teammates.

These failed code guesses are what dock you points and make your opponents even MORE likely to win, meaning you have to expertly walk the line between vague and incomprehensible, as if trying to pass some sort of lexical sobriety test. This is great for the people who play Codenames at a party but want something that feels a bit more directed, involved, or competitive (since the base Codenames is kind of “well whoever scores more points wins but we can’t super directly affect each other beyond affecting the board we share”). There are others eavesdropping on your messages, and if they can decrypt your clues, well, you’re going to be in an extremely bad way. In more detail, each team has their own screen, and in this screen they tuck four cards in pockets numbered 1-4, letting everyone on the same team see the words on these cards while hiding the words from the opposing team.
